January 30th, 2010 found the Sutherlin Lions participating in the state-wide food collection project. There were two sites for collection (Shop Smart and Bi-Mart) with each site having at least two volunteers manning them. Lions were positioned at the entrance of the stores who explained what was going on and handed out suggestions of what could be used to the people entering the stores; and the collection barrels, manned by Lions, were stationed at the exits.
The large blue barrels, donated for the occasion by the city, were filled up to the point they had to be emptied 3-4 times because of the public’s generosity. Then there were those people who asked if they could just give money instead. The answer was yes.
The final count for the club’s efforts for the day? 725 pounds of food and paper products and $400 in cash donations.
All this went to the Oakland/Sutherlin Food Pantry, who was very happy to be on the receiving end of the project.
Kudos to the community for their generosity, and the volunteers who were from the Sutherlin Lions club, the Branch club and the Lioness club. Together we can do so much.
