Hood River High School Choir to England

I spent my spring vacation, in late March, by taking members of the Hood River High School Choir Music Department to visit a foreign country. Mark Steigham, the Choir Music and Band Director, and Tom Schaefer, the Lions Club Advisor, talk with students and determine where the group will travel. The purpose is 3-fold: To gain experience singing before large groups of people, especially in all churches and cathedrals; to travel to foreign countries and gain a real sense of history; and to work, travel, and have fun together in a real cohesive unit. Depending on the number of students traveling, the ratio of adults is 1 per 10 students if necessary. Of course Mark and Tom are not in this count, as their job is organizing everything and meeting all the necessary contacts along the way. Adult chaperones mainly keep track of the youth assigned to them, ensuring their safety as well as getting them to performances.
Once location and numbers are determined, the largest step comes into play: fundraising. Each youth in 2007 had to raise about $2000. Additionally, every Lions Club in Hood River County donates to the overall cause. Needless to say, the fundraising was successful and the trip planned was executed with the help of PID Dennis Trichenor.
This year, the historical Cantebury War site was the highlight for the kids. To sing a bit, 2 performances, and enjoy the area was worth the wait. Along the way, the Lions club in four different towns hosted the youth and the chorus members delivered humanitarian donations to each club along the way for use in future community projects.
Overall, the HRVHS choral group had a great time. They gave great performances in every stop along the way and came home tired and satisfied for a job well done. Preparation for the 2008 trip is full steam ahead and we anticipate another successful trip.
